The true story about seven ordinary women and one extraordinary event....

Summer is coming, and the residents in Joplin, Missouri, anticipate the rush of freedom and activities that will follow graduation, summer classes, vacations, overflowing gardens, family time, and plenty of photo opportunities.

What they don't anticipate is the mile-wide tornado that will devastate the town on May 22, 2011, in the middle of dinner preparations, visits to friends and family, and graduation ceremonies. The tornado kills over a hundred in the deadliest tornado disaster in the modern era and leaves thousands more homeless.

In the face of this tragedy, seven women must gather their courage and hold their families together. Each will make different choices to protect loved ones and strangers and recover from the winds of destruction.

Tornado Warning is the story of seven families who lived through the devastating tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011. The book begins with an explanation of how tornadoes are formed and how they are rated on the F scale. Then it introduces the seven families, beginning with how their day started before the tornado changed their lives. It takes the reader through the hours leading up to the storm and then describes what happened as the storm was upon them. More than half of the book is about what they experienced in the aftermath: the wreckage, the trauma of seeing dead people, and the chaos that followed. great read
Amazing book for anyone in a tornado zone or visiting one. Full of details and stories of the women who survived Very touching.
This week I decided to read something a little different than I normally do. This is, in a way, a non-fiction book. There are seven stories within it, but all of them are based on the true even of the tornado that destroyed Joplin a few years ago. I have always had a deep interest in tornados so when I saw this book I decided it was time to switch things up a bit and read something really interesting.

This ebook version that I read tells the story of seven woman who are living their ordinary lives when a tornado suddenly strikes their town. Because they are always under tornado watch no one is expecting the damage that comes to them on that one quiet night.
But while the story is about the tornado primarily, it focuses mainly on the aftermath and what these women must do to get their lives back in order.
Each woman is unique in her own way of course and each deals with the devastation differently. All suffer losses but it is how they deal with them and manage to get back with their lives which is the most important.
Follow these seven woman through hell and back in this thrilling and touching story.

I really liked this story for what it was. To be honest I was expecting most of the story to be about the tornado when it struck but that was over within the first couple chapters. The rest of the story, as I have mentioned above, is how people deal with such devastation.
The author proved that they clearly understood the pain and suffering of these women through their writing. It made me feels things I wish I didn't have to. This story is of true events and what these women felt many hundreds across those cities did as well.
For those looking for a true story on Tornados or just love knowing about historical events this book is the book for you.
I would rate this book at a 3 out of 5 star rating.
I had just read the Joplin Tornado I Survived Book and it had this one as a reference. I love that they are real stories in chronological order, not each story told and then you read about the next person. It's amazing that there were so many survivors!
This was not all sugar-coated. Ms. Heiner wrote about seven families experiences before and after the tornado and followed up a year later.

I've always been interested in tornadoes since childhood. I read every book I can find about tornado and those experiencing them. This was one of the best I've ever read. Ms. Heiner's writing had me there in the middle of it with the families. I fell in love with each person and their hurting.

I pray I never have to go through these families went through, but if I do I hope I could hold up like they did when they didn't know where their loved ones where or if they would live through the violent storm.
I purchased this book in May, but couldn't bring myself to read it until now. The pictures still give me goosebumps, especially the one of St. Johns Hospital. I can't even imagine how they were able to evacuate that place and then immediately begin triage on the grounds. This book was very good. It showed the very best of humanity and some of the worst. The response to the disaster was awesome from the people of Joplin, the surrounding communities, the state, the entire country, and even the world. This book tells a small part of the story.
Well done! Definitely worth reading, for the human drama as well as for the information about tornadoes, and the excellent tips for preparation and survival in any kind of emergency. Excellent dialogue; strong narrative scenes. It was a page turner. Sad, of course, but there were many, many people, human like all of us, who came together to help and console the victims. It's sobering to realize that such a disaster could happen to any of us.

I'm giving it four stars, even though in many aspects it's close to five, because (1) the Melinda "character" was IMO slight compared to the others. I wanted to know more about her and her family, though perhaps there were reasons; and because (2) I had some difficulty keeping the families straight, though I'm not sure how this could have been remedied the way the story is set up with the time frame.

Still, this story of some amazing women was a compelling reading experience, a gripping backward journey that culminated in that awful day for some residents of Joplin, Missouri. I made the mistake of reading it late at night, and then I couldn't get to sleep, the images were so vivid. I have read other works by Ms. Heiner, and she is an excellent writer.
