Irvin Cobb was a funny guy ninety years ago. Everybody thought so then and you'll think so today if you read his stuff. He was a famous humorist in an era of famous humorists. He is still funny and his books read easily today...especially since many of them are available for free download to Kindles and similar reading devices. ROUGHING IT DE LUXE is a series of essays on vacation travel wherein Cobb makes fun of everybody in range, particularly himself. Within the humor, however, you get glimpses of life in the 1920s, about the way people presented themselves and interacted. Lots of laughs.Product details

Roughing It De Luxe Irvin S Cobb 9781278401072 Books Reviews
You have to have visited the West to appreciate what is written. I guess the book was written prior to 1915.
Good down to earth read by a real cowboy.
Over a hundred years old and full of subtle humor. Best if you know the western USA. Reminded me of Art Buchwald's style of writing.
Since this book was written in 1913, I really wasn't sure what to expect except that it would probably be dry and boring. But I have actually enjoyed it - and I'm not through with the first chapter yet. Mr. Cobb's writing is wryly humorous and slightly self-depricating and I am finding it hard to put this book down. His descriptions of his fellow travelers and the people and places they visited had me chuckling - I could totally relate! Funny how some things never change...
It's the humor filled story of a guy who has gone to the Grand Canyon....around 1900. He writes rich characters from the train and describes great moments within the Canyon itself. If you have someone down and out or in the hospital, and you are sitting with them....this is the book to pick up and verbally read....and accent verbally the wonderful thrills of travel. Cobb is a natural guy at humor and sees little things that people miss out on. Strongly recommend the book and take your time....it is worth the effort.
