The author, not being of sound mind after a car accident, is invited to hitchhike from Tempe, Arizona to Mexico City with a friend from Paris who has two PhDs. A week after the accident, he has the stitches taken out and an hour later they hit the road. The first thing he learns is Mexico can be kind of dangerous and travel with his new friend can go from the boring to the terrifying in an instant. There are a few embellishments along the way and although the book follows their route south for a good deal of the trip, fifty per cent of the story is true and the other eighty per cent not so much (my apologies to Yogi Berra). Without the language, apprehensive about the food and water, wary about the Police, Federales, banditos, a burgeoning revolution and a brilliant Frenchman who seems to lead them into trouble at every turn, the author finds himself on edge throughout.

For anyone who has on his or her “bucket list” hitchhiking through Mexico, read this instead! It has it all—adventure, big laughs, and more than enough danger to keep you reading. Fidel makes a cameo near the end, but he's kind of made fun of.

Waiting On Fidel or How I Almost Hitchhiked To Mexico City edition by Stephen Paper Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Well written, fast paced misadventures of two young men ( one an experienced Frenchman, the other a naive Minnesotan) hitch hiking through Mexico in the 70's. Full of humor, surprises, and dubious life philosophies. Captures the spirit of the times.
Hilarious travel book full of unbelievably messy situations involving two young men determined to survive while hitchhiking through Mexico in the 70's. Chased by the police, bandits, rebels and a few women, the reader is held in suspense at every turn. And, yes, Fidel Castro does appear near the end...on a surf board, in an airplane, and on a director's chair in the mud. And, no, the main character doesn't join the revolution or become fluent in Spanish.
As someone who is growing up in the current generation, this book opens up new doors that I could only dream off. Hitch-hiking to Mexico today is unheard of and most definitely a one way ticket. Mr. Paper does an amazing job describing the prominent era of the 70's with his own unique style and sense of humor. When they say that "old" is "gold," they certainly are not kidding around. This book has ignited my inner adventurer spirt and has motivated me to go on my own journey across south america one day, and hopefully I run into some crazy experiences just like the two main characters of this beautiful story.
If you’ve never been young, injured, hair-brained, and traveling far from home, all at the same time this is your chance to ride that experience. Top that off with the opportunity to travel in the early 70s, a time which could present the wanderer with pulse pounding intercultural confusions and threats but without today’s possibility for complete viciousness…and you have tasted Stephen Paper’s life on-the-road in WAITING ON FIDEL. It’s a great account of a restless and exposed twenty-something weaving in and out of jams and revelations in a completely unfamiliar culture, just for the heck of it. Steve Paper exercises a lively wit to leaven and lighten this travel memoir with a collection of puns, jabs, asides, and even a few blue notes.
So, read it on the bus; read it in the air; read it on the train. Read it to be twenty and on the road once again.
Enjoyed book from the beginning, made me laugh out loud several times. The trip they were on made we want to travel more to see interesting places and people.
Well, that was the best fiction I've read in years. The narrator and his friend Marat go through many adventures together, and it alternates between humor and deep philosophy. You also get a good sense of what Mexico was like at the time.
This is the only book you’ll ever read where Fidel Castro wears red speedos with a hammer and sickle logo, an army green kepi and smokes a cigar while surfing and hanging ten. Who knew? I laughed throughout.
For anyone who has on his or her “bucket list” hitchhiking through Mexico, read this instead! It has it all—adventure, big laughs, and more than enough danger to keep you reading. Fidel makes a cameo near the end, but he's kind of made fun of.
