Theory might pretend; we craved these things - the camp, the refuge, the sentinels in the dark, the hearth - before we made them; they are part of our human manner, and when this Civilisation has perished they will reappear.

The Old Road Classic Reprint H Belloc 9781334406171 Books
Learn about the ancient road from Winchester to Canterbury, keeping its prehistoric secrets, and sometimes obscured medieval pilgrimage route. This book was a joy, reminding me of the Pickwick Papers. Like Pickwick, Belloc and a friend start out on their quest on foot. If only Belloc had told more about his adventures at the inns along the way! I could tell there were some interesting untold tales. As am American, and not living in Belloc's century, it was still was of interest to a contemporary reader. See if you can pick out the associations with Jane Austen and her book Emma. See the hobbits in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, journeying through the downs with their ancient dead. And finally, mourn with Belloc for the lost Faith. Only Belloc remains on the feast of St. Thomas a Becket in the darkening cathedral that once saw thousands at that shrine! Enjoy the view from the window Belloc opens into that stretch of country.Product details
